“Hi, my name is Anya Grace Rozek.  I am 8 years old and I have Type 1 Diabetes.  I do 1500 shots a year and 2600 finger pokes.  It doesn’t hurt anymore, I am used to it . . . I have holes in my fingers now.

Diabetes limits what and when I eat.  Diabetes keeps me from sleeping over at other people’s houses.  Sometimes I get really sick because of Diabetes.  When I am sick I have to miss school.  I love school.

I have hope still.  We are Stepping out to raise money for a cure.   A cure would mean no other kids would get Diabetes.  Without Diabetes life would be different. “

-Anya Rozek

Anya was diagnosed with Diabetes on May 20th 2007.  Her blood glucose level was close to 800.  Anya was a very sick little girl.  She was hospitalized for 4 days while doctors brought her number down. Those 4 days were packed full of information that taught her parents how to care for her.  Anya learned how to sit through the finger pokes and injections.  She watched adults count carbohydrates she ate.  She listened to everyone talk about her future.  She felt the IV drip into her arm.  On day 4, Anya went home . . .

Now, 3 years later, Anya is a healthy, active girl who takes an active and responsible role in her daily care.

Anya can count carbohydrate, figure out her insulin dosage, test her urine for ketones, and check injection sites to make sure they are healthy.  She can inject her own insulin and prick her finger to test her blood

Anya accepts that she has to take different precautions than most 8 year olds.  She accepts that playdates and sleepovers happen at home for now

Anya understands that we can’t fix her pancreas. She understands that she will forever be a Diabetic.

Anya hopes they find a cure, preventing more children from becoming Diabetic. She hopes a better way is found to manage Diabetes, for herself and other kids who live with this disease.

Anya knows she has a team of doctors and a family on her side.  She knows that one little person can make a big difference.

Anya is asking her friends, family, neighbors, and community members help her raise money this year.  She is asking that you step up while she Steps Out.
