Royal Oaks Pin Flag Flies Proudly in Afghanistan
As many of you know, Royal Oaks Country Club supports families of our deployed soldiers through an annual fund raising event called the American Turkey Shoot Out. The funds we donate are dispersed through Operation Homefront, a not-for-profit organization providing emergency and morale assistance for our troops, the families they leave behind, and for wounded warriors when they return home. At the 2009 Turkey Shoot Out held last November, we exchanged flags with the 162nd Engineering Company prior to their deployment. The 162nd is now stationed somewhere in province of Helmand, Afghanistan and flies the ROCC pin flag as a constant reminder of our support. I thought you would enjoy this photo and email I recently received from Captain Baca, the unit’s Commander.
Ken Vartanian and the ROCC American Turkey Shoot Out Committee
Dear Ken,
I hope this find you well. Please send my best to the folks at the Club. Your (the ROCC) flag is flown daily next to ours. I cannot count how many times I have explained the story of why 162 EN Company flies the pin flag. Every time, bar none, the remarks are positive and disbelief that your organization provides that kind of support.
A couple of things have happened since we last communicated.
We have been attached to the Marines and have been in/ around the Helmand province pretty much since we have been here. The soldiers have been actively engaged the entire time. They are challenged daily and are meeting that challenge head on. We already have a plethora of stories that I will have to relay at our next meeting.
The second thing that has happened is that I have absorbed 2 platoons out of the great state of Washington. They are based in Centralia, Wash and are now unified for the duration of the deployment. I believe this to be somewhat fitting in that your club mimics this cross border association.
Anyway, I have not been keeping tabs on the funds for support. I hope that Operation Homefront has been meeting that requirement. However, if funds are still available, I would like to request, since the Washington soldiers will now be working side by side with us, that we can open that resource up to soldiers from both units.
Please let me know what you think. Again, I am somewhat out of the loop.
Send my best to all. I do look forward to our return and playing a little golf.
I am going so send you a couple of pics. I have to break it up because firewall will not allow big data sends
Best Regards,
Captain Baca
