Happy New Year! Hopefully 2011 was a good year for everyone. The New Year has already begun with some interesting weather including snow, high winds and flooding. Spring can’t get here soon enough!

The Golf Industry Show in Las Vegas is right around the corner, taking place February 27 March 2, 2012. For those attending the GIS, there will be a Northwest Chapter Hospitality room on Wednesday February 29th from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Las Vegas Hilton.

David Phipps, GCSAA Class A golf course superintendent at Stone Creek Golf Club in Oregon City, Ore., has been selected by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America Board of Directors to receive the 2012 GCSAA President's Award for Environmental Stewardship.
Phipps will receive the award during the 2012 GCSAA Education Conference at Celebrate GCSAA! presented by Syngenta, Feb. 28. Celebrate GCSAA! is hosted by GCSAA President Robert M. Randquist, CGCS. The conference (Feb. 27-March 2) will be held in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show (Feb. 29-March 1) at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
"This is a well deserved honor for Dave," Randquist said. "He is the consummate environmental steward and continues to be an innovative leader in sustainable land management for the golf industry." [More]

Technically speaking, one could make a case that Rob Golembiewski, Ph.D., should not even be conducting turfgrass research at Oregon State University. Oh, it’s not because of a mandate handed down by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the Department of Agriculture. Instead, it is due to the fact that according to the details of his appointment, Golembiewski is supposed to be splitting his time solely between 70 percent teaching and 30 percent extension. [More]
