SUMMARY:2019 Fall Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The OGCSA hopes you will plan to attend the 2019 Fall Meeting as host Superintendent\, Steven Beyer and Illahe Hills Country Club welcome us to their beautiful club. We are excited to announce that Micah Woods\, Ph.D. will be joining us as our featured speaker. \nMicah Woods\, Ph.D.\, is the founder and chief scientist of the Asian Turfgrass Center. Since graduating from Oregon State University in 1998\, Micah has been traveling extensively\, collecting data\, and advising turfgrass managers across Asia\, Australia\, North America\, and Europe. From 2001 to 2005\, he was in New York to study with Frank Rossi at Cornell University. The broad scope of his research on grasses around the world led to his collaboration with scientists from PACE Turf to create the MLSN guidelines which are applicable to turf in all climate zones\, or as he says\, “any grass\, anywhere.” You can read more about Micah’s unique take on tending turfgrass in his book\, A Short Grammar of Greenkeeping\, as well as on his website\, www.asianturfgrass.com. \n  \nAt this meeting we will also be presenting USGA Agronomist\, Larry Gilhuly with the Dick Malpass Distinguished Service Award. Gilhuly received this award this past spring at the Annual meeting\, but was unable to attend and accept it personally. On November 6th Larry be in the flesh to accept his award. After 36 years with the USGA Greens Section\, Larry is set to retire this September. Larry has been a longtime friend\, supporter and advocate of the OGCSA and its members. We hope you can attend to help us honor him for his service. \nAlong with Dr. Micah Woods\, also in attendance will be Mr. Steve Gould from Bayer Environmental Science. There has been a great deal of conversation this past year about the chemical Roundup (Glyphosate). SUMMARY:2020 OGCSA/WWGCSA Service Project @ The Children's Course
DESCRIPTION:Regrettably\, out of an abundance of caution in response to the Coronavirus pandemic\, we have decided to postpone next week’s OGCSA | WWGCSA Service Project until further notice.\n  \nWe are excited to announce that on Thursday\, March 19th\, the 2nd annual OGCSA/WWGCSA joint service project will take place at the Children’s Course in Gladstone\, OR.  Once again Superintendents and industry partners from Oregon and Washington will be joining forces to give back to the community and assist the Children’s Course in completing maintenance projects around the property and give them a jump start to the 2020 golf season. \nThe Children’s Course is located in a beautiful setting nestled between the Clackamas and Willamette Rivers in Gladstone. It originally opened for play as Rivergreens Golf Course in 1961 as an 18-hole\, par 3 course. In 1989\, following the development of apartments on the perimeter\, the course was redesigned into a 9-hole\, par 3 course. \nIn 1996 founder\, Duncan Campbell and his wife Cindy\, had a vision to create a golf course that would be dedicated to children. The Children’s Course was born from this vision. Providing a location for children to learn and play the game of golf was just part of Duncan’s plan. He envisioned using golf to provide positive youth development. \nThe Children’s Course eventually partnered with the national organization\, The First Tee and has embraced its Core Values. Our mission is to impact the lives of kids ages 4-18 by providing learning facilities and educational programs. The game of golf helps to instill integrity and make people of rich character. \nThe Children’s Course operates as a non-profit 501 (c) (3)\, and is funded by private donations from foundations\, corporations and individuals. The golf course is home to The First Tee of Greater Portland\, which provides young people with character-building and life skills lessons using golf as the platform. \nTo learn more about the Children’s Course visit www.childrenscourse.org \nMap to event parking\n\nSchedule of Events\n8:00am – Breakfast\, Welcome & Job Assignment \n8:30am-1:00pm – Service Project \n1:00pm – Lunch \n**Parking will be in Meldrum Bar Park\, 19 Meldrum Bar Park Rd.\, Gladstone\, OR 97027 \nInterested in donating equipment\, product or funds to support this event? SUMMARY:Oregon/Washington GCSA Virtual BMP Facility Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Best Management Practices (BMPs) are the tools that successful superintendents use every day to maintain quality playing surfaces. The adoption of BMP plans at the facility level helps the Oregon\, Western Washington\, and Inland Empire chapters and GCSAA to advocate for golf course superintendents with national\, state and local lawmakers as well as the media by demonstrating our commitment to professional land management using science-based BMPs including the responsible use of inputs. \nThe Oregon GCSA\, Western Washington GCSA\, and Inland Empire GCSA invite you to learn about creating a BMP guide for your facility. \nDate: April 29\, 2021 \nTime:  11:30 am to 1:00 pm PDT \nLocation: Online GoToWebinar \nIn this workshop Mark Johnson\, David Phipps and Emily Fuger\, GCSAA will explain why BMPs are important at your facility and show how easy it is to use GCSAA’s tool to develop your own BMP plan. Lastly\, we will help you start adapting the state guide to your own facility by leading you through some highlights of one chapter.  We encourage you to use a split screen with GoToWebinar to follow along and create/work on your own facility BMP. In addition to the benefit of having a BMP plan\, you will earn 0.2 education points from GCSAA for attending the session\, and you can also earn 0.50 service points once you complete your plan. \nRegister for the workshop on-line at\nhttps://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/7394500884203459856\nQuestions about this workshop? Contact Alexis Wenker at ogcsa@ogcsa.org or (503)344-6535 or Mark Johnson at mjohnson@gcsaa.org or (785)312-5161. \nBEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES – WHY NOW? \n\nBMP plans are more important than ever before. While you’re probably already employing many BMP practices\, having the plan proves to those outside the golf industry that superintendents are professional land managers guided by peer-reviewed science and are committed to making the best choices for their facilities communities.\nBMP plans create opportunities for the golf industry to demonstrate healthy land stewardship.\nBMP plans help preserve existing grant funding for turfgrass research that helps golf remain environmentally and financially sustainable.\nBMP plans are excellent communications tools when talking with the public\, media or special interest groups.\nGCSAA’s BMP program has inspired local\, state and federal partnerships\, which demonstrate golf as a model in professional land management.\nBMPs help keep products in the golf market when GCSAA submits comments to EPA on active ingredients making their way through Registration Review.\nBMP plans help protect golf against legislation and regulation that affect the golf industry.\n\nPREPARE FOR THE WEBINAR \n\nHave your computer ready to access the webinar through the GoToMeeting software.\nView the PDF of the Oregon Guide or Washington Guide.\nVisit GCSAA’s Brief How-To Videos located at org/bmp which will familiarize you with the tool. Each of the videos is less than 5 minutes in length.\nThe seminar will be recorded and made available On Demand at gcsaa.org to assist you with the completion of your guide.
