In this month’s Superintendent Spotlight we feature Chuck Wolsborn who has been with Gresham Golf Course for the last 44 years.

Describe your facility in 10 words or less:
Relatively flat, a good course to walk with a large mens’ club.

What is a little-known fact / fun fact about your facility?
We have a five-foot sturgeon in our irrigation pond.

What’s your favorite hole at your facility?
No. 13, OB on the left, water right and ahead. It can have some tough hole locations.

What’s the biggest challenge your facility presents to you as superintendent?
Drainage, drainage, drainage.

Excluding your current facility, what is the top golf course you’ve played? 
Pasatiempo

Favorite all-time professional golfer? 
Arnold Palmer

What’s your all-time favorite movie?
Shawshank Redemption

What’s your favorite sports team and why?
New England Patiots. Tom Brady has been my fantasy QB for years

Let’s say there’s a three-day weekend coming up—what are you going to do?
Stay home and BBQ, something always happens at the course on a 3 day weekend.

What led you down the path of becoming a superintendent? 
I am just doing this until I get a job in my major.

What’s the biggest change that has occurred while you’ve been in the industry?
The pesticides and spray equipment have become more effective and safer.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve witnessed or done as a superintendent? 
We had a small plain crash on the course by the maintenance facility and in the middle of play.

Who is your mentor? 
My Dad.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to become a superintendent? 
It’s all about building a staff that is loyal and feel involved. I’ve been fortunate.
