OFFICER CANDIDATES:

PRESIDENT: Stephen Purdy, Willamette Valley Country Club

For the past year, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the superintendent at Willamette Valley Country Club. Prior to that, I held roles as both assistant superintendent and superintendent at Langdon Farms Golf Club. These positions have allowed me to grow professionally and gain valuable experience in course management and team leadership.

For more than a decade, my wife Emily and I have welcomed four children — Ella, Charlotte, William, and Clara. We live on my family’s farm just outside of Sublimity, Oregon, where we’re raising our kids to appreciate the outdoors and understand the value of hard work. In my free time, I enjoy going outside with them, playing sports, exploring nature mainly through hunting.

Having four young children under the age of twelve has taught me a great deal about patience, flexibility, and the importance of approaching each situation with a fresh perspective. These lessons have translated directly into my role on the Board of Directors, where I’ve had the opportunity to listen, adapt, and serve with intention. Over the past five years, I’ve gained meaningful experience and insight that I believe will continue to benefit the association moving forward. I’m committed to doing my part to support its mission and help it grow in the years to come.

VICE-PRESIDENT: Josh Loy, Stewart Meadows Golf Course

My name is Josh Loy, Superintendent at Stewart Meadows Golf Course in Medford, where I’ve dedicated a significant portion of my career. My connection to golf began in my youth, and my professional experience in the industry now spans 33 years, starting as a teenager at Rogue Valley Country Club. I’ve spent 29 years at Stewart Meadows, progressing through various roles before becoming Superintendent in 2014. Over the past few years, my responsibilities have grown to encompass overseeing all golf course operations, including the pro shop and café. This is a team effort, and I greatly appreciate the dedicated people I work alongside. I also expanded my expertise by obtaining a landscape contractor’s license, enabling me to manage both golf course maintenance and commercial landscaping projects for KOGAP Enterprises, Inc.

For the past five years, I’ve had the honor of serving on the OGCSA board. Initially as a Director, I then took on the responsibilities of Secretary/Treasurer. These roles have provided invaluable insights into the organization’s operations and the challenges and opportunities facing our industry. I am now running for Vice-President, driven by a desire to contribute at a higher level and continue to advocate for the OGCSA and its members. I believe my experience and understanding can be valuable in serving the OGCSA, and I am committed to working hard for its members. Thank you for your support.

SECRETARY/TREASURER: Steven Beyer, Illahe Hills Country Club

Growing up on a small dairy farm outside of Silverton, Oregon, is where I learned some of the work ethics needed to succeed in the turf industry. Combine those values with schooling at Oregon State and great people to work with have brought me to where I am today. I have been the Superintendent at Illahe Hills Country Club for the past six years with stops at Waverley CC, The Idaho Club, Chambers Bay, and Tualatin CC along the way. It is an honor to be part of the OGCSA and share in many of the relationships and friendships that are a direct result of a fantastic organization. I look forward to serving you as Secretary/Treasurer- GO BEAVS!

SUPERINTENDENT DIRECTOR CANDIDATES:

Jason Blythe, The Reserve Vineyards & Golf Club

Fellow OGCSA members. My name is Jason Blythe, Director of Agronomy at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club. I’m excited to be running for Superintendent Director on the OGCSA Board of Directors.

My interest in Turfgrass maintenance started in High School as a baseball player. Playing baseball, you spend a lot of time on field maintenance. Watering, mowing, dragging, edging. This led me to apply for a summer job at The Reserve. During my first years at The Reserve, I was able to be a part of hosting Peter Jacobsen’s Fred Meyer Challenge as well as the Jeld-Wen Tradition. One of 5 majors on The Senior Tour at the time. Tournament preparation was an incredible experience, and the golf bug bit me.

The desire to learn more about golf courses and dive further into the industry led me to pursue a new job with Duininck Bros. A golf course construction company based out of Prinsburg, Minnesota. With them I was able to travel the country building, renovating and upgrading golf courses. This experience was amazing and has been invaluable in my career.

Realizing I needed to plant some roots, I enrolled in Rutgers University Turfgrass Management program. Rutgers provided the foundation and knowledge that I needed to move into managing a golf course. Since graduating in 2008 I have been at The Reserve.

I have been fortunate enough to work in this industry for over 20 years. It has taken me places and enabled me to do things that I never would’ve imagined. I have been lucky enough to work for industry leaders and mentors that have set an example and paved the way. It is now my turn to give back. Thank you for your consideration.

Stephen Bright, City of Portland: Rose City/Colwood/Redtail Golf Courses

I started in the golf industry in 1988 during the construction of Wing Pointe Golf Course in Salt Lake City. Later I went to work for Oquirrh Hills Golf Course for 15 yrs in Utah as a Assistant Superintendent/Mechanic. It was a 60-yr old 9 hole public course for the first 5 years I was there. Then they acquired land to build the back 9 holes to make it an 18-hole facility. I was looking to move to Oregon in 2018 and was recruited by Pumpkin Ridge Golf to be the Equipment Manager. I worked there from 2018 to 2020. During that time, we hosted two PGA events (Korn Ferry Tour). I moved to Vancouver Washington and was hired as the Superintendent at Lewis River Golf Course from 2020-2021 in Woodland Washington. I was interested in getting back into Public golf again. Where I was hired by the City of Portland as an Equipment Manager at Rose City Golf Course in 2021. In 2023 the Superintendent retired from Rose City/Colwood and I was hired as the new Superintendent over Rose City/Colwood Golf Courses. Recently given Redtail Golf Course to Supervisor over also. My passion is bringing new life to old public golf courses. I look forward to learning and working with others in the industry.

Kyle Watt, Awbrey Glen Golf Club

Greetings, my name is Kyle Watt, and I am running for a Superintendent Director position in our association. My career in the golf industry started in the Portland area, caddying at private clubs at the age of 14 and then working at Columbia Edgewater Country Club in the bag room. After high school I attended Central Oregon Community College in Bend and studied turf management. During my time at COCC I worked at Broken Top and completed my first internship. From there I transferred to Washington State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Turf. While at WSU I completed an internship at Coeur d’ Alene Resort and worked at the local WSU golf course. After college I spent 13 years at Pronghorn Club, ten of which as the superintendent of the Fazio Course. For the past 8 years I have been the superintendent at Awbrey Glen Gold Golf Club in Bend.

I have been very lucky to call Bend home for most of my adult life. My wife Michelle, daughters Maybel (14) and Caralyne (12) keep me busy when I am not at work. We enjoy everything that Central Oregon has to offer and spend most weekends traveling the state for youth soccer.

The OGCSA has been a big part of my career, and it is time for me to give back to this great organization. Over the past several years, industry professionals in Central Oregon and beyond have helped create a network that benefits those in golf maintenance. I would like to continue to lead and be a resource for others locally and statewide.

Thanks for considering me as a Superintendent Director with the OGCSA.

Michael Wright, Riverside Golf & Country Club

My golf course maintenance career started in 2007 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club as a seasonal employee. I worked full time in the summers and part time during the school year while on a Track scholarship at Concordia University. I was enjoying working on the golf course so much that I wanted to make it my career path. After finishing my bachelor’s degree in business administration, I decided to attend Washington State University to work on a second bachelor’s degree, this time in Science, Specifically Turfgrass Management. While at WSU I did internships in Colorado at The Glacier Club, and in West Virginia at The Greenbrier, where we hosted the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic. After school, I was fortunate that there was an opening at CECC where I returned and worked for almost nine years while I moved up the ranks to be the Assistant Superintendent.

I have been at Riverside for about four years, and I have been the Superintendent for three and a half of them. I have spent many years attending OGCSA events as an Assistant and now as a Superintendent. Being a part of OGCSA Board is something that I have always wanted to do, and I think now it is the right time. I would like to give back to the organization and help the Association grow and support its members.

Thank you for your consideration to be a Superintendent Director on the Board For the OGCSA.
