In this month’s Superintendent Spotlight we feature Chris Robson who is Course Superintendent at Glendoveer Golf and Tennis. 

Describe your facility in 10 words or less:
A 36 hole public facility in the heart of East Portland

What is a little-known fact / fun fact about your facility?
It is 94 years old.

What’s your favorite hole at your facility?
No. 5 East from the tips. Par 3 256 yards

What hole on your golf course is hardest to maintain (and why)?
No. 4 East. It has 100 year old firs on both sides of the fairway and it faces north. Tough to grow grass. Always wet.

Outside of your own, what is your favorite golf course (and why)?
Brasada. Tough to beat the views.

Have you had a hole-in-one? When and where?
2003 – Glendoveer West Hole 18 175 yards

Who is your favorite all-time professional golfer?
Tiger!

Which movie can you watch that never gets old?
A River Runs Through It

Beavers

What’s your favorite musical artist or band?
Ryan Bingham

What’s your dream vacation?
Anywhere without cell phone reception!

What led you down this career path?
Started working on the maintenance crew at 17 and never looked back.

What’s the biggest change that has occurred while you’ve been in the industry?
Labor. Retention of good employees

What would you invent right now to make your professional life easier?
A product that takes out English Lawn Daisy forever.

Who is your mentor in the golf industry?
Every Super I’ve had the pleasure of working with.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to pursue this line of work?
Remember to enjoy life off the course, it can take over.
